Big improvements are on the way to SAP user interface proposal generation and workflow!
SAP CPQ is the next-generation sales experience planned for S/4HANA (officially, part of C/4HANA). In the 1811 and 1902 planned releases, CPQ will integrate with VC through the SAP Product Configuration engine! Having had experience in previous sales functionality (SD certified) and now SAP CPQ (CallidusCloud CPQ certified), I can say that several gaps on the SAP front-end have been closed and put to rest. One of the most critical areas of improvement is around output document generation for quotes and proposals.
Those who have dealt with Smart Forms in SAP know both the pain and rigidity of setting up custom output documents. In the next-gen SAP CPQ, document generation is incredibly flexible and intuitive to use. Each document section can be altered independently based on user roles, made into templates, or swapped-out with files from your PC (it even supports eSignatures). You can enforce mandatory sections or allow the user to include optional pages, as well as control the sequence of pages. Ties to configuration and other sales data can be easily linked through use of CTX tags or other tag-based syntax in the document.
We at eLogic have done our share of work with third-party integrations and custom tools, which typically offer difficult-to-manipulate output documents (XPS) or have limited ways to insert and customize sections of the document. Conversely, the SAP CPQ document generation tool is ultra-flexible in file types, and allows merging PDF documents, DOCX files and more -- delivering a combined PDF as output to the customer.
